Cafe Eiles Photos

Cafe Eiles is located in Josefstadt (8th district) at Jofestädterstraße 2. It's just behind and to the left of the Rathaus (City Hall), at the corner of Joseftädterstraße and Landesgerichtsstraße.

Cafe Eiles - Exterior
You won't run into many tourists at Cafe Eiles, even though it's near several prime tourist attractions (Ringstraße, Rathaus, Parlament, Volksgarten).

Cafe Eiles - Interior
I guess it's just far enough off of the beaten path to avoid the throngs.

Cafe Eiles - Interior
Which gives it an authentic gemütlichkeit that's sometimes missing in the noisier, busier cafes.

Cafe Eiles - Coat Stand
It's a place where you can comfortably drop in alone, order a Mélange, and spend two hours reading newspapers.

Cafe Eiles - Chandelier
A place of tradition, where the decorations (and some of the staff) have been in service for decades.

Cafe Eiles - Table
Even when busy with mostly Viennese customers, the volume in Cafe Eiles rarely exceeds a low hum.

Cafe Eiles - Reading the Newspaper
This is Viennese Cafe style.

Cafe Eiles - Wiener Schnitzel
The cafe is also a restaurant, with a classic Vienna menu.

The previous photos in this post were taken in April. This and the following photos were taken over the past few days.

Cafe Eiles - Neon Sign
Cafe Eiles is lit up at night. I need to take some evening shots of the interior.

Neon Sign - Cafe Eiles has been a favorite spot for Viennese writers and actors for some time.

Cafe Eiles - Neon Sign & Entrance
Entrance - Each cafe has, at any one time, a single headwaiter who embodies his cafe.

Hanging Clock - Some of these headwaiters become celebrities in their own right.

Cafe Eiles - Menu
Menu - Cafe Eiles' previous headwaiter, Herr Alfred (Smetana), wrote a book about his time at the cafe.

Cafe Restaurant Eiles Alt-Wiener Cafe seit 1901 (Old Viennese Cafe since 1901) is bordered by Lenau Gasse, Josefstädterstrasse and Landesgerichtstrasse.

Cafe Eiles - Cafe Patrons
I'm not certain, but the pair in this picture, taken earlier today, may be the same pair featured in the series' first photograph, taken back in April.

Cafe Eiles - Interior
Hang up your coat and take a seat.

Cafe Eiles - Nudelsuppe / Noodle Soup
Nudelsuppe (Noodle Soup) - This soup was a part of the daily Menü (daily Special). I had a Sodazitron to drink. It was made with fresh lemon juice.

Gebratene Leber mit Kartoffel (Fried Liver with Potatos). The main dish on the daily special was good, classic Viennese food.

Cafe Eiles - Melange / Coffee with Milk
The obligatory Mélange.

The Mélange was just right. Look at the foam on top.

There's even a non-smoking section.
